The University Grants Commission (UGC) has given the green light for Indian universities and higher education institutions to implement biannual admissions. This move aims to provide more opportunities for students and bring the system in line with global standards.

According to Jagadesh Kumar, the Chief of the UGC, institutions can now admit students twice a year, taking inspiration from renowned universities abroad. “By offering admission twice a year, Indian universities can benefit many students who missed out on admission during the July-August session. This could be due to delayed board results, health issues, or personal reasons,” Kumar explained to PTI.

Starting from the academic year 2024-25, Indian institutions will have two admission cycles: one in July-August and another in January-February. This significant change is expected to address the concerns of students who were unable to secure admission during the regular cycle due to various reasons such as delayed board results, health problems, or personal circumstances. With biannual admissions, students can stay motivated and secure admission more quickly without having to wait for a whole year.

The strategy aims to create a positive environment for both students and industries, as companies will now be able to conduct campus recruitments twice a year. Kumar highlighted that the dual-admission system will optimize resource allocation within higher education institutions and enhance career prospects for graduates.

While biannual admissions are not mandatory, higher education institutions with the necessary infrastructure and faculty can take advantage of this opportunity to increase student enrollment and introduce innovative programs in emerging fields. Kumar emphasized the importance of proactive preparation, administrative readiness, and seamless support mechanisms to ensure a smooth transition for students admitted at different times of the year.

In summary, the UGC’s approval of biannual admissions represents a significant shift in the Indian higher education landscape. It offers students greater flexibility, improves the overall academic experience, and propels Indian higher education institutions towards meeting global educational benchmarks and strengthening their international reputation.
