Once in an unhappy marriage with a controlling munitions manufacturer, fled her home on a bicycle one night. Arriving in the U.S. just before World War II, she impressed MGM studio head Louis B. Hedy Lamarr had a strong interest in aviation and, at the time, was one of the few female pilots licensed. She devoted herself to flying during World War II in order to aid in the war effort.
