What is Engineering

Engineering is one of the most popular career paths in India, which every student chooses to pursue, whether it is their parent’s wish or any youngster’s passion. However, we have heard many times that most engineers are unemployed due to the high level of competition in the industry and that there is no future in this field. But we all know that this is untrue and that if you work hard and build your skills in your core subject, you will be successful. Let us now look at what Engineering is and why most youngsters select this field.

What is Engineering?

Engineers are often referred to as ‘creators’ since they use their scientific and mathematical skills to create, develop, and improve the world around us. They are responsible for many of the things we rely on on a daily basis, including the roads and bridges we use, the buildings we live and work in, the energy that powers our home, and the electronic devices as well as the basic mobile applications we use on a daily basis. In technical terms, Engineering is the utilization of mathematics and science to solve issues and create unique solutions.

Types of Engineering –

There are various branches of Engineering including Core Branches and Non-Core Branches below are all the types of Branches that are available in Engineering

1. Civil engineering:

Civil engineers plan and construct infrastructures including roads, bridges, buildings, and dams. They also create water and wastewater systems, transportation networks, and electricity grids.

2. Aerospace engineering:

Aerospace engineers develop airplanes, spacecraft, and other related systems, with a focus on aerodynamics, propulsion, and materials.

3. Electrical engineering:

Electrical engineering is a vast area that includes the research, design, and application of electrical systems. It includes the creation, distribution, and use of electrical energy.

4. Mechanical engineering:

Mechanical engineers develop and build a wide range of machinery and systems, from automobiles to aircraft, medical gadgets, and robots. Heating and cooling systems, power generation systems, and industrial processes are also designed and developed.

5. Chemical Engineering:

Chemical engineers use chemistry and physics concepts to create and improve systems for chemical manufacture, energy production, and other applications.

6. Robotics engineering:

Robotics engineers design, manufacture, and program robots for a variety of purposes ranging from industry to healthcare.

7. Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering:

Electronic circuits, communication systems, and digital technologies are the primary focus of this branch of engineering in electronics.

8. Computer Engineering:

The main objective of this branch is to design, develop, and combine computer systems, including hardware and software.

9. Information Technology (IT):

Information technology involves the management, maintenance, and use of computer hardware and software to solve business and technical issues.

The ones listed above were the most well-known engineering branches or types of engineering that have been in practice for a long time.

Some new Engineering branches that have recently been introduced are as follows:

1. Data Science and Engineering:

This field is concerned with maintaining and deriving insights from huge databases.

2. Cybersecurity Engineering:

As cyber risks become more common, the profession of cybersecurity engineering is expanding. Engineers in this sector are responsible for creating and implementing secure systems and cyberattack defenses.

3. Blockchain Engineering:

This technology is useful for purposes other than cryptocurrency. Blockchain engineers create and build safe and transparent distributed systems.

4. Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning Engineering:

Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning are the development, design, and execution of AIML systems and applications.

Skills for Engineers

Engineers must have a number of crucial talents. These prepare students to create ideas that can help them succeed and develop in their jobs and prevent them from staying unemployed.

  • Creativity:

Engineers must have creative ideas that allow them to come up with innovative designs, ideas, and techniques.

  • Communication skills:

Strong spoken and written communication skills are necessary for efficiently sharing ideas, delivering results, and collaborating with colleagues and clients.

  • Technical Skills:

Engineers must have a strong technical foundation in their chosen field, whether it be electrical circuits, structural analysis, or computer programming.

  • Mathematical and computational skills:

Mathematical and computational skills are required, as well as the ability to apply computational tools and software for modeling and analysis.

  • Teamwork:

Technical projects frequently need collaboration with different teams of specialists. It is critical to be able to collaborate well with others.

Why choose Engineering as a Career Path

There are several reasons to pursue a career in engineering. Here are some of the most common reasons:

1. Job security:

Engineers are in great need in a variety of industries, and the future of employment for engineers is expected to grow faster in the coming years.

2. Good salaries:

Engineers often make decent incomes, and earnings for some specialists are quite high.

3. Opportunities for promotion:

Engineers have several opportunities for growth during their careers. They can advance to leadership positions or specialize in a specific area of engineering to become experts in their industry.

4. Challenging and rewarding job:

Engineering is a profitable yet difficult field of job. Engineers solve issues, design and create new products and technology, and use their creativity and skill set.

5. Make an impact on the globe:

There is a chance for Engineers to truly change the world. They focus on projects that make people’s lives better, such as creating infrastructure that connects people together, creating renewable energy sources, and developing innovative medical technologies.

How to Become an Engineer

In India, pursuing Engineering is not that difficult, but there are some procedures that must be followed in order to become an Engineer.

There are two methods to begin your Engineering career in India-

1. After completing your tenth grade:

  • You can begin your career by studying for a three-year Diploma in Engineering.
  • Later, if you want to pursue graduation or Btech in it, you can apply online through the government, where colleges are assigned based on your preferences and percentage in your last year of diploma.
  • It is a 4-year program for pursuing BTech, although you may direct admission in the second year of BTech. This benefit is only available to students who have completed a Diploma in Engineering.

2. After completing 12th grade:

  • It would be best if you took the Science stream in junior college.
  • After finishing the 12th grade, you must sit for an entrance exam known as MHCET (Maharashtra Common Admission Test).
  • After the results of your entrance exam, you may register for college allocation through the government website. You can enroll yourself in many Engineering coaching institutes which help students to score better in the Entrance Examinations
  • Later colleges will be assigned to you based on your MHCET percentile from your selected list of colleges.
  • Next, You will be admitted to the first year of the BTech program.

FAQs

1. What is the expected yearly beginning package for an engineer?

A recent graduate is likely to receive a beginning salary of INR 2.40 LPA – 3.60 LPA, while an experienced candidate can expect a salary of INR 11 LPA – 13.50 LPA.

 2. Is it possible for engineering students to work in domains outside their area of specialization?

Absolutely, an engineer can work in a different field. For example, a student who has chosen to major in electronic engineering is still able to work in the IT industry if he so chooses, however doing so may need some additional skills.

3. Is a career in engineering a suitable fit for me?

You can consider starting a career in engineering if you are creative, have problem-solving abilities, and are interested in science, math, or coding.

  4. Which is a better option for pursuing a BTech after a diploma or a 12th-grade education?

Each has its own list of benefits. For example, if you pursue a diploma, you may gain more technical and practical knowledge, making studies in BTech much easier.
Whereas, if you pursue BTech after the 12th, you will have the opportunity to explore different engineering fields and choose the one that is right for you.

Although pursuing a Btech after a diploma does not require any form of Entrance test, which is necessary after the 12th. Still, fewer seats are reserved for those with diploma backgrounds while applying to colleges for BTech.

5. What are the options for postgraduate study after BTech Engineering?

For postgraduation, you can either go for MTech (Master of Technology), PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) or MBA (Master of Business Administration).

Conclusion

In conclusion, the overall knowledge about engineering provided above is what every student seeks to clear up their doubts and guidance in deciding a career path that fits them best. However, choosing a career path in Engineering is a common and most recommended field in India because it not only educates students to become Engineers, but it also teaches students many life lessons, ups and downs, as well as helps improve each and every student’s overall personality and character development.
