Organic Agriculture Advancement in Uttarakhand System
Uttarakhand is predominantly an agrarian state. Agriculture accounts for approximately 22.4 percent of the state’s domestic product, and between 75 and 85 percent of the population relies on agriculture for their livelihood. According to the Uttarakhand State Planning Commission report from 2007, the wheat productivity in the hills is 13.2 quintals per hectare, while the rice productivity is 12.36 quintals per hectare. Consequently, agricultural prospects are swiftly advancing in the state. Particularly, in the field of organic agriculture, Uttarakhand stands out. The area benefits from a highly accessible rain-fed agriculture system and minimal use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. As a result, the produce grown by farmers in the area is not only nutrient-rich but also has significant medicinal value. This presents an opportunity to foster a farmer-friendly environment for organic farming, which can provide better market value for small and marginal landholders. The Department of Rural Development and Agriculture is consistently working on multiple projects aimed at improving the livelihoods of farmers and self-help groups (SHGs). This is achieved by enhancing the value of their produce and facilitating access to favorable markets.
