3d Modelling And Finite Element Analysis Of Ankle Joint Using Computed Tomography (Ct) Data

The ankle joint is sub-type of the biarticulary joint known as the talocrural joint and is situated in the lower limb. It is a distal tibiofibular joint that is brought about by the bones of the leg and the foot that is known as the tibia, fibula and the talus. Predictably it is the hinge type joint and it allows for movement in the dorsal and plantar direction of the foot. In this research the comparison between total deformation and Von Mises Stress on the ankle joint when it is subjected to different off loads was performed with the aid of variation in boundary conditions on it. Over all, the scope of this study aims at the detailed analysis of the ankle joint and the subsequent creation of a 3D solid model of the ankle joint and subsequently, the analysis with a consistent set of forces of the body weight to verify this model under static loading condition. CT is used to get the images for the geometries of interest. For image processing to get the three dimensional solid model of the tibia, fibula and talus, image processing and computer aided design (CAD) are used and CT images are used. ESD analysis of three-dimensional solid model of tibia, fibula and talus is carried out on ANSYS using Finite Element Analysis. Orthopaedic surgeon may use the results of this study to comprehend the mechanical characteristics of the ankle joint during leg and foot prosthesis and implantation along with implant fixation and designing a improved implant using the findings of the study.
